Athletes In Search of Low Back Pain Relief: A Solution That Actually Works

Low back pain can keep you from activity and exercise
Low Back Pain

Low back pain (LBP) is an all too common symptom that affects millions of people worldwide. Finding effective treatment strategies and solutions is crucial for improving the quality of life for those playing and training with LBP. It can stem from poor movement mechanics, muscle compensation, or other underlying health issues. It often can contribute to pain, tightness, or spasm resulting in a drop off in performance and movement quality. Don’t let LBP stop you from achieving your goals. The athletic trainers at Infinite Athletic Training are here to help.

Understanding the Causes:

To effectively address low back pain, it's essential to understand its root causes. Common factors include poor training design which leads to acute symptoms such as increased muscle soreness and spasm, resulting in postural accommodations. These postural changes can wreak havoc on your ability to move and navigate daily routines and are often a sign that your body is trying to protect an injury. The acute and long term changes can lead to symptoms ranging from sciatica to conditions like arthritis. Identifying the specific cause can guide tailored treatment plans for better short and long term outcomes. The experts at Infinite Athletic Training are here to listen and evaluate the symptoms to determine the source of the pain and offer strategies for relief.

The experts at IAT offer a wide variety of treatments for low back pain including:

Soft tissue mobilization, Cupping or massage:

Movement is extremely important to managing injuries or symptoms involving the low back. Sometimes, the movement patterns we currently utilize to navigate everyday life, physical activity, or your sport can contribute to muscle tightness, soreness and spasm that change the normal ways that you move. This can lead to smaller muscles or muscle groups to participate more than they’re designed for, overloading those tissues, and leading to movement inefficiencies, and that dreaded LBP.

Assisted Stretching:

Sometimes you may need a little help with getting into ranges of motion that are difficult to achieve while our body is in spasm trying to protect itself. With assisted stretching, it can really open the door to getting in some quality rehab time with some new-found range of motion!

Mobility and Muscle Activation Techniques (METs):

Once we unlock new ranges of motion, we want you to OWN that new range. We will start to get the muscles involved to coordinate or “talk” with each other to begin reteaching better and more appropriate movement patterns. Sometimes, we utilize different muscle activation techniques to drive more targeted communication between your brain and those muscles for a more profound effect.

Exercise Prescription:

Movement is Medicine. Period. After we’ve established better flexibility and mobility, it’s time to put it to work. Exercise selection is super important here to allow you to exercise in ways that are safe, but also allow you to make positive changes that stick.

Modalities:

Often, the hardest part about getting to the most effective components of rehab and training is getting started in the first place. We offer many neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES) options such as Phoenix Wave, H Wave, and Marc Pro before and after training and rehab along with a variety of Hyperice products designed to get the ball rolling. Red light and NIR therapy (PBM) can be amazing augments to each of these treatments.

Maintaining appropriate posture and mechanics while performing activities is key to both increased pain free training and improved athletic performance. The more confident you are, the better your movement quality, overall health, and likelihood you will continue working hard toward your exercise goals.

We always take time to evaluate what your current training or exercise routine looks like. Oftentimes, it can be extremely telling as to whether or not it is under preparing you for the

activities or tasks at hand or it can be overloading tissues leading to LBP. Engaging in an exercise plan that better addresses key muscles (or muscle groups) and adequately prepares you for what you're asking your body to do will often provide better support to the spine and better overall movement preparedness, reducing the risk of low back pain symptoms.
